<AeroMatter> so uh
<AeroMatter> /what happened/
<Jason_> joey's server shit itself again
<Jason_> i sent him info for a new server
<Jason_> he could use one of mine
<Jason_> definitely seems silly to keep using whatever host he's using now -- clearly something is not working
<AeroMatter> clearly
<AeroMatter> everything was wiped earlier (including archives) and only the default index pages were available
<Jason_> i heard
<Jason_> well
<Jason_> AeroMatter: i offered him a server
<Jason_> maybe he'll use it
<AeroMatter> hopefully he does
<Jason_> bear in mind that, if what happened to joey happened to me, i would flip out and never use the host again
<Jason_> ever
<AeroMatter> or at least hosts IRC on it separately so everything doesn't blackout
<Jason_> i need tosleep
<Jason_> night
<AeroMatter> night
<Joey> <AeroMatter> /what happened/
<Joey> everything
<Joey> like
<Joey> it started out with part of the smbx forums posts table being corrupted/deleted
<Joey> and then now i'm trying to restore a backup from yesterday to get the site files and most of the databases back
<Joey> i don't know if this will work, i just know it's taking a long ass time
<Joey> things that will be safe when all of this is over:
<Joey> - all midnight reality website data, including SF and SMBX
<Joey> like, not databases, just the website pages
<Joey> - configurations for webserver/mailserver/etc., so i can get things running as quick as possible
<Joey> - irc network/services data is intact except for anything that was done in the last, like 36 hours
<AeroMatter> what are the chances that the forum can't be recovered?
<Joey> well
<Joey> it can go two ways
<Joey> 1. i restore yesterday's data, so we have all members and stuff but the post table is missing a chunk from this month, potentially corrupted
<Joey> 2. my provider reloads a backup that they have, assuming it works this time, but then we run the risk of losing more forum stuff but for less time and hopefully no corruption
<AeroMatter> hm
<Joey> so then what i know for sure is that all posts made from saturday to yesterday will probably be gone either way
<Joey> and what i also know for sure is that i'm going to make it so that this /cannot/ happen again
<AeroMatter> as in changing providers, and more frequent backups?
<Joey> probably both, but at the very least the latter
<Joey> my worry with switching providers is that i have a good deal with the one i have
<AeroMatter> where do you keep your back ups btw
<AeroMatter> you have an archive page, and a whole alternate forum
<AeroMatter> and those were both on the server
<Joey> yeah that was just a backup of those sections though
<Joey> like, specifically smbx forum data and smbx wiki data from two distinct points in time
<Joey> that i loaded into those locations/database myself
<Joey> in terms of "where do i keep backups"
<Joey> i really don't make enough backups to have a centralized location for them! however, my provider has a quick backup feature that i can use once a day that basically tarballs my entire system and stores it in a folder
<Joey> so those show up there
<Joey> but i'll develop a better backup system
<AeroMatter> as for corrupted posts, will that break anything if you decide to go that route
<AeroMatter> and breaking as in site breaking stuff
<Joey> probably not. we'd just have to delete a lot of topics
<Joey> but i would rather load a somewhat earlier backup that has more posts even if it means our last week's worth of account registrations are gone
<AeroMatter> i guess that would do the least amount of damage yeah
<AeroMatter> oh and btw you should take jason up on his server offer for irc since everyone was in the dark all day because irc was down
<AeroMatter> there was a few people who went to nsmbx but that's it

Well, Joey, if you happen to be reading this, good luck.

Have people congregated elsewhere? Or is it just the few people here?

So Joey's forums are down, huh? Hopefully this matter will be resolved with minimal, if no damage to the forum. Otherwise good luck Joey getting things fixed.

Yeah, same on all counts. This is a bizarre situation, I hope everything goes well for you, Joey. (and I'm also wondering if there's another SMBX forum that people have gone to).

Right now I am having significant and unnecessary trouble with the databases. I am trying to restore backups and get all data back. As Aero's log said, I have all of the IRC files and all of the flat files for the web server; the thing I'm having problems with is simply restoring the databases. Since this has involved restoring system-wide backups, the entire server has sometimes been down.

As of right now, the IRC is up and functioning in read-only mode (which just means don't bother registering new nicknames/channels because they won't be saved, most of your IRC data should still be there). Follow SMBX on Twitter and Facebook - I may post some updates there.

It's starting to revert to the way it was previously. At least we know that it's still being worked on. The forums and wiki are the only things that are down.

Am I the only have having trouble trying to access Joey's forums again?

EDIT: Nevermind, they are back up.
Deleting a post doesn't delete an action,
if you did something wrong it shall remain as something you did wrong.
This also applies to sheets of paper, if you wrinkle them,
they won’t go back to it’s previous state no matter what you do.
While that is reality, you can compensate it being better,
not everything is lost, nothing is lost to begin with.
Do everything you can to become a better user, it’s not too late!
